Ken Martin-Executive Director
Responsible for the organization’s consistent achievement of its mission and financial objectives. Prior to Care Communities, Ken was the Executive Director at Texas Homeless Network for twelve years. While there, Ken grew the agency from one full-time and three part-time staff and a budget of about $200,000 to an agency of sixteen full-time employees with a budget of $1.6 million. Ken also provided training and technical assistance to social services agencies throughout Texas and led the agency’s local, state and federal legislative advocacy efforts on issues related to ending homelessness. Ken has a Bachelor of Business Administration from Abilene Christian University and over 30 years of experience in local government and nonprofit management. Ken joined Care Communities in July 2015.

Mary Gatlin Hearon-Development Director
Responsible for planning, implementing, and meeting contributed income goals for the organization, including major donor giving, grants, electronic and direct mail appeals, and overseeing and implementing special events. Mary has over 25 years of accomplishments in non-profit organizational leadership, fund development, organizational systems and operations, program development and evaluation, community coalition building, and direct services program delivery. Mary received her master’s degree in counseling and child development from Texas Woman’s University. Mary joined Care Communities in August 2016 and the position of Development Director as of October 2016.

Jim Anderson-Program Director
Responsible for general management of all Care Communities social service programs. These programs include the care teams, care match, and health care facility visitation. This position supervises program statistics and outcome measures as well as direct client service managers. James brings 25 years of social work and project management experience. He recently moved to Austin from California where he managed multiple-system improvement efforts focused on improving outcomes and eliminating racial disparities in the California child welfare system. James received his master’s degree in social work from the University of Texas at Austin. James joined Care Communities in July 2016.

Leti Alvarez-Care Manager
Leti’s experience includes 15 years in both the for-profit and not-for-profit sector expressing her passion for helping others. She traveled to Madagascar in 2006 to serve as a Peace Corps volunteer working in sustainable community development and teaching environmental education.She has also worked in the fields of conservation and education in Mexico, and North America serving those less fortunate. Previously, Leti was the House Manager for the Ronald McDonald House assisting families in pediatric crisis. Leti holds a B.S. in Wildlife Ecology and a B.A. in Education with a minor in French studies from the University of Texas. In addition to helping others, Leti’s passions are yoga, travel and being in nature.

Z Blair-Care Manager
Z is a native of Los Angeles but has lived in Texas since 1983. Z received her BA in Social Work from St. Edward’s University in 2008 and earned her MSW as a graduate student at Texas State University-San Marcos. She is happy to be able to serve our community as part of the wonderful team at The Care Communities. Z shares her life with her husband Jeffrey and their Labrador/Red Heeler mix Saffron. She loves traveling, organic gardening, being a volunteer and is invested in the arts; visual, audible and performance of all distinctions.

Esther Camacho-Care Manager
Esther was born and raised in Alpine, Texas and moved to Austin via El Paso, Texas. She graduated from the University of Texas, El Paso with a BBA and a secondary teaching certification in Business Education. Esther moved to Austin after retiring from education as a high school counselor and secondary education. She began her career with the Texas Education Agency as the Trade & Industrial Education Director under Career & Technical Education. She served on many state and national education organizations and was the Texas Corporate member on the National Skills USA student organization. She holds a Masters in Education and another in Occupational Training and Development.

Mindy Spyker-Volunteer Recruiter and Trainer
Mindy moved to Austin from Nairobi in August 2016 and joined Care Communities as the Volunteer Recruiter and Trainer. She earned a Master of Public Health at the University of South Florida and a B.A. in Sociology at Emory University. Mindy’s experience includes nonprofit work in southern and eastern Africa in nutrition, gender, and maternal and child heath. When she’s not recruiting volunteers, Mindy enjoys competing in triathlons and camping around the country.
